Design and Construction of Ro-Ro Ramps

Denith Engineering, secured a significant contract in 2020 to design and construct two Roll-on/Roll-off (Ro-Ro) Ramps for our client in Mozambique. These ramps serve a critical role in facilitating the efficient offloading of aggregates from transport barges using off-highway equipment supporting the construction of the gas terminal.

Enhanced Offloading Efficiency with Hydraulic Actuation

The Ro-Ro ramps boast an ingenious design featuring hydraulic actuation. With the hinge point situated on land and the free end resting on the barge, this configuration ensures precise and controlled movement throughout the offloading process. As a result, the operation becomes more streamlined and efficient.

Seamless Operation and Adaptability

The ramp is lifted using hydraulic cylinders when not in use and during barge docking operations. Once the barge is securely moored to the jetty, the hydraulics are then activated, gradually lowering the ramp at a predetermined speed until it safely lands on the barge. Once in position, the hydraulics are deactivated, allowing the free end of the ramp to adapt to the barge’s displacement and tidal changes. This adaptive feature ensures stability and safety during the offloading process.

Specifications and Reliability

Each ramp measures 19m in length, providing ample space for the smooth movement of vehicles and equipment. With a clear width of 5.5m, the ramps accommodate efficient passage. Moreover, their robust construction enables a safe working load (SWL) of 75 Tonne, ensuring reliable performance even under demanding conditions.

Precision Assembly and Testing

Denith Engineering prides itself on its meticulous approach to quality and safety. The Ro-Ro ramps under went rigorous assembly and comprehensive testing and inspection in Cape Town to ensure optimal functionality. Once successfully tested, the ramps were transported fully assembled to the designated work site, expediting the project timeline.
